Abstract

When Cantillon’s Essay was published in 1755 it was becoming accepted that moral issues were outside the scope of economic theory. Cantillon acknowledged that there might be a conflict of interest between entrepreneurs and society, writing, ‘It may perhaps be urged that Undertakers seek to snatch all they can in their calling and get the better of their customers, but this is outside my subject.’
