Conflicts Involving Ethnic Issues

  • Chapter
The Peacemakers

Abstract

Ethnic issues are at the heart of some of the most dangerous and protracted disputes in the world today. The conflict between Palestinians and Israelis, for example, has been described as a struggle about ‘ethno-nationalism’ (Heraclides, 1989). The Lebanon conflict involves struggles between Maronite, Arab and Druze ethnic groups. The current struggle for reform in the Soviet Union is going on against a backdrop of ethnic conflict.
