Abstract
It was the Jews who developed the graphic arts all over Europe and introduced them into Portugal.1 But even before this, they had a flourishing industry in illuminated manuscripts, which germinated from a ‘scriptorium’ in Lisbon that was granted to them by King Alphonse V and then protected by Queen Leonor, wife of King John II.
