Abstract
When a force is applied to a material, a stress will be developed within the material and this will generate a strain, which is a dimensional change. Strain may be elastic, meaning that the material will return to its original dimensions when the stress is removed, or it may be plastic or permanent, so that when the level of stress reduces to zero the material will not revert to its original dimensions.
