From Success to Uncertainty
NATO provided a mechanism for containing and integrating West Germany into the American designed postwar economic and security orders. Likewise, NATO shaped and supported the security and economic agendas of successive postwar West German governments. The passing of the postwar order, marked by German unification and the end of the cold war, has raised troublesome questions about the viability of NATO in the emerging post postwar order, about NATO’s possible contribution to the creation of a stable panEuropean security order, and about Germany’s continued interest in remaining a member of the alliance. Tentative answers to these questions are offered below.
