Abstract

The ability to represent information by combinations of binary symbols in such a way that changes introduced by faulty transmission can be detected or corrected is extremely important. If information is represented in this way there must be redundancy in the code, in other words there must be combinations of bits which do not represent normal data. These sequences are denoted as not allowed. Some error control codes simply detect one or more bit changes whilst some identify which bit(s) were changed and can then correct them. Clearly, in a binary system, correction is accomplished by the act of bit inversion.
