Abstract

Franklin D. Roosevelt and Benito Mussolini often expressed the wish to meet personally—an event that never happened however.1 It was perhaps a lucky occurrence because they would have learned that, both in terms of political vision and personal style, “the two leaders—as historian John P. Diggins has remarked—never really understood one another.”2
