Abstract

As I shall be discussing authorial motivation in émigré prose, I should like to quote an ironic passage about Zinovii Zinik from Arnold McMillin’s inaugural lecture ‘The Dislocation of Russian Literature’:

London-based Zinovy Zinik’s Russofobka i fungofil disturbs any lingering complacency we may have about our own society, where phenomena as disparate as giving to the Salvation Army at Christmas, buying rounds in pubs and tending suburban gardens are excoriated as examples of British hypocrisy.1
