Abstract

Before embarking on the main theme, I should like to make a few preliminary observations. If one recalls the old Russian arguments on the ‘West-East’ theme, it is impossible not to notice that they always became more intense at Russia’s moments of historical crisis. Thus it was in the 1840s to the 1860s, and thus also during the October Revolution. This insistent turning to the ‘West-East’ theme, which usually figures in the alternative form of ‘West or East’, has always concealed within itself dissatisfaction with the present and thoughts about Russia’s possible paths in the future.
