Transition from Natural to Artificial Dentition

  • Chapter
Prosthetic Treatment of the Edentulous Patient

Abstract

For most people, the prospect of losing all their remaining natural teeth, particularly the anterior teeth, and having nothing with which to replace them immediately after extraction is unacceptable. Fortunately, this situation can usually be avoided by fitting a denture immediately following tooth removal. This transition to the completely artificial dentition is a major and irreversible procedure for the patient in which both timing of extractions and the provision and maintenance of dentures must be planned with great care.
