Abstract

Increasingly, aspects of the invention, development, and testing of a drug are a collaborative effort and no single organisation is able to undertake every aspect of the work by itself. Many such activities are contracted out by pharmaceutical companies. For example, universities may do fundamental research, contract research organisations may undertake more development oriented work and clinical research organisations, the test work. Another option increasingly favoured is that of collaboration with another drug company in the development of a new drug, with a view to its subsequent exploitation by each of the collaborators.
