Abstract
Gary Becker is a renowned economist whose claim to fame rests largely on the ingenuity with which he argues that there is a calculating little capitalist concealed in all of us. In A Treatise on the Family he applies his technique and point of view to what most people would regard as a highly unlikely area — the field of marriage, where one would expect the heart to dominate the purse. Not so, according to Becker. His conclusions are startling, to say the least, and not all of us will recognize ourselves.
