Abstract
During almost two decades of activity as a diplomat, Ulrich von Hassell occupied a number of posts. These were to prove important for the development of his own political ideas as well as for the foreign service of Germany. His career led him from Rome to Barcelona, Copenhagen and Belgrade, and finally back to the Italian capital once more. By 1932, Hassell was to be found among the most prominent and influential members of the German diplomatic corps, a position which was to be confirmed in the following years.
