Abstract

The purpose of this final chapter is to draw together the major themes of retailing and retail management dealt with in the previous individual chapters of the text. An opportunity is also taken to look at some particular contemporary issues in retailing in the UK. Reflecting especially the concerns of Part One of the text, the principal topics of this chapter are the continued evolution of retailing, competitiveness and efficiency in retail distribution, retailing corporate strategy, information technology, and international retailing.

Although the food/grocery trade is the example most frequently quoted in analysis of intertype and vertical power, the Monopolies Commission clearly recognised the existence of these forces in its consideration of the 1989 proposed acquisition by Kingfisher of Dixons Group. This acquisition would have produced a combined market share of 21–26 per cent in the retailing of electrical goods, and the Commission appeared to accept that this enhanced horizontal power would have an adverse intertype impact upon smaller multiple and independent electrical goods retailers, and that the improved trade terms available to the largest of such retailers through their enhanced vertical power over manufacturers would result in a reduction in the number of these, while lower trade prices would not necessarily be passed on to consumers. By a majority the Commission recommended that the proposed merger should not be permitted.   45. The 1980s have seen a very significant increase in consumer credit. Excluding borrowing for house purchase, consumer credit in money terms rose threefold from the end of 1981 to mid-1988 when it reached 14 per cent of annual household disposable income. In real terms this represented a rise of about 3 per cent per quarter over the period. This consumer credit expansion has undoubtedly fuelled rising retail sales levels, although interestingly the proportion of consumer credit provided by retailers fell over the period 1981–7 from 12.2 per cent to 7.1 per cent.
