Abstract
Insurance companies and Lloyds syndicates are important institutional investors in fulfilling their function as a risk transfer mechanism through their intermediation between policyholders and the financial markets. They are custodians of large funds built up from premiums received which are available for investment and from which claims and other expenses must eventually be paid.
