Abstract
In the 1960s and 1970s industrial relations were often at the forefront of British politics. All manner of ‘British diseases’ were diagnosed at a time when the economies of the countries defeated in the Second World War — West Germany, Japan and Italy — were overtaking the British economy. Often prominent in such diagnoses were strikes and various other ills attributed by many to the actions of the trade unions.
