Abstract
Other contributions in this volume focus on the struggle that took place between the ruler and the estates in the Habsburg territories. They show the levels at which it was fought, and discuss the tactical and strategic differences between resistance in the Austrian hereditary lands and in Bohemia and Hungary. In this chapter I should like to address the reasons for these differences, looking in particular at social structure and the estates.
