Abstract
In the nineteenth century the system and the policy of the Bohemian estates as they existed before the election of the first Habsburg king were seen as chaotic, torn apart by the extreme egoism of different groups.1 This at least was the idea of those historians who passed a positive judgement on the Habsburg dynasty and concluded that Ferdinand I—according to his strong monarchical principle of early absolutism—had had to abolish ‘feudal monarchy’ for the benefit of the country. Consequently, the defeat of the rebellion of the estates in 1620 was also considered to be a success, as political stability was restored and the country was spared the fate of a ‘Polish future’, namely a state unsteadily ruled by the nobility.
