Abstract
Gerhard Oestreich once recommended that the views of the estates regarding state and society should be deduced less from the normative statements and writings of theoreticians than from the demands and gravamina of the estates themselves.1 I shall attempt here to follow this proposed line of research and to present the situation of Bohemia from the standpoint of the estates of Bohemia and Poland. The Defenestration of Prague was intended by the Protestant opposition to be a demonstration in the typical Bohemian manner which would make a return to the previous situation impossible. But what precisely was its ultimate aim?2
