Abstract

It is often said that we are living today in a ‘post-feminist’ age. People who say this usually mean one of two things: that the new wave women’s movement of the 1970s and 1980s has achieved its goals, or that it has fizzled out, leaving little changed. In reality, neither of these things has happened. Women’s activism continues and the touting of ‘post-feminism’ says less about the women’s liberation movement than about a counter-movement in which men have attempted to reassert control of women. Thus it is often men who say ‘Women are liberated now’, or ‘You see: women were never meant to be equal.’
