Abstract

It is difficult to overstate the importance of fast, cheap and reliable telecommunication networks for the growth of computer-based information systems. However, it is equally hard to overstate the problems of developing successful networks. They affect most aspects of information systems management, from issues of policy and strategy, to the much narrower technical details of implementation. In this chapter we shall first discuss the opportunities offered by networks, before briefly summarizing some of the recent technological trends. This sets the scene for an examination of the issues involved in network management and the alternative network services currently available. Networking is a high security area, and we discuss the risks involved, before concluding with a recognition of the need for a network strategy.
