Abstract
A very important result in classical thermodynamics is the law of increase of entropy, discussed in Section 8.6. This law states that, when a change takes place in a system with an adiabatic boundary, the entropy S of the system always increases when the process is irreversible and remains the same when the process is reversible. When, in addition, there is no work interaction, so that the system is isolated, there is the further condition that the internal energy U of the system is unchanged.
