Abstract

In its usual form, the synchronous machine consists of a stator with a polyphase winding which produces a rotating magnetic field, and a magnetised rotor having the same number of poles as the stator field. The rotor may incorporate permanent magnets, or it may be magnetised by direct current flowing in a field winding on the rotor. As its name implies, the distinctive feature of the synchronous machine is that the rotor revolves in synchronism with the rotating magnetic field of the stator, and its speed is therefore related to the frequency of the AC supply to the stator.
