Abstract
Noise is a problem in many parts of industry, partly because of its direct effects on the workforce and partly because of its impact on the local community. Acoustics is important in design because many machines have to meet noise and vibration specifications. It is good engineering practice to design quiet machinery since, all other things being equal, the quiet machine is preferred by the customer to the noisy one. Noise is often an indicator of damaging vibration within a machine.
Take care of the sense, and sounds will take care of themselves.
