The Correction of a Balance-of-Payments Disequilibrium

Abstract

Taken as a whole, the balance of payments must always balance. Foreign currency necessary for making payments abroad must have come from somewhere. If there is an outward total currency flow, the balance must be achieved by drawing on the gold and foreign currency reserves or by official borrowing.
