Abstract
The world is approaching a significant turning-point: the end of a period of confrontation between super-powers and the beginning of a new era in which peace will be the result of mutual confidence instead of the balance of nuclear terror. Rather than focussing on issues of short-term survival in the face of possible nuclear extinction, we can now dispose ourselves towards more long-term development and the fulfilment of human needs. The new challenge facing the international community is the eradication of poverty and the need for all countries to have the opportunity to develop in a world of shrinking resources. People everywhere must have the possibility to lead rewarding lives and enjoy the fruits of their labours. To achieve this, patterns of development must be sustainable, not only economically and financially, but also environmentally.
