Abstract

This chapter will examine what have been the principal trends in the size and composition of the poor population in the countries of the European Community during the 1970s and 1980s. In the course of this discussion, it will be necessary to recall a number of the methodological and conceptual questions raised in the previous chapter. But as will also become quickly apparent, the available data are severely limited and efforts to establish harmonised definitions, for use in Europe-wide research and policy evaluation, are still at an early stage.
