Abstract
Every Bank Holiday weekend the newspapers are full of tales of the misery inflicted upon those who want to ‘get away from it all’. It seems that many have to content themselves with hours of much closer contact with others than they would have liked — in traffic queues on the motorways, in coaches and trains packed to capacity or in planes stacked high in the air while their pilots await a slot in the schedule. Being subjected to any of these delays is far from pleasant but the economic consequences of these transport inadequacies are more serious still.
