Abstract
Housing renewal policies have a long history in Britain and there have been a wide range of area-based and other programs. There is also a substantial literature which provides various evaluations of different policies in different areas (Thomas, 1986; Gibson and Langstaff, 1982). This chapter provides an introduction to some of these policies and to some of the major themes emerging from the more recent experience of policies to improve the housing stock. It also focuses on the ways in which the emphasis in renewal is changing.
