Romanticism and After

  • Michael Edwards

Abstract

Yeats and his friends were not, as it turned out, ‘the last romantics’, and nor, I dare say, are we.8 Romanticism has often been dismissed but it does not go away. The concerns of the Romantics still have urgency for us, and their quarrels with themselves and with each other need still to be listened to. Many of our opportunities, as writers and readers, and many of our problems, though not all, lie within Romanticism, nearly two hundred years after the publication of Lyrical Ballads.
