Youth and Ghettoization in Northern Ireland

  • Chapter
Acts of Union

Part of the book series: Youth Questions ((YQ))

Abstract

In this chapter I trace the impact of sectarian ghettoization on the lives of the young in Northern Ireland. Drawing on the fieldwork conducted in Derry, I plot the effect of increased political polarisation on the sensibilities of working-class teenagers. This chapter examines how youth cultural practices reflect the ghettoization of social life and, indeed, reinforce the divisions between young Protestants and Catholics.
