Abstract
British business has as its objective the achievement of a high-productivity, high-pay, high-employment economy. While there is widespread support from many quarters for that objective, there is far less consensus on the best methods of achieving that end and on the steps which should be taken in the shorter term to tackle such issues as low incomes, low pay and employment incentives. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an analysis of these issues from a business perspective, and to set out the CBI’s views on the way forward.
