Abstract

The voluntary housing movement has a long tradition of meeting the housing requirements of older people. This chapter examines the scale of the need and the range and nature of the movement’s response to it. Three particular aspects of provision are highlighted; the development of sheltered housing for the elderly, pioneering work in the field of housing for frail elderly people and schemes that assist older people to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Sheltered housing for sale is considered in chapter 9.
