Synopsis

This chapter on interventions deals first with the principles of treatment. An attempt is made to aid understanding of some of the mechanisms involved in the process of change. Secondly we address the issues of treatment priorities and goal setting. This is timely as the occurrence of HIV infection has prompted a radical review of drug addiction treatment on an international scale. For many, the treatment ‘goalposts’ have shifted and we are now in the centre of a debate in which a number of old chestnuts have reappeared, especially those issues that surround prescribing. Modes of intervention, non-professional and professional, that exist on both sides of the Atlantic are then addressed, and finally some brief comments concerning the training of staff and maintenance of staff well-being are offered.
