Abstract

In the same way that quality assurance has assumed prominence in the UK construction industry, so international interest has grown steadily, and somewhat in parallel. The basic concept of quality assurance and application of certification schemes have existed in Europe for many years, in particular within the area of product conformity for building materials and components, and to a limited extent within construction management systems. Whilst there is much commonality in quality assurance philosophy, there is some disparity in the approach, standards and systems of European countries, and even greater division in worldwide practice.
