Some analysts of women’s progress worldwide suggest that education is the single most important factor in improving women’s lives and status. Certainly it correlates with improvements in family health and standards of living, and in women’s personal independence and access to wealth. Palestinians tend to argue that it is increasing wealth rather than education which is the leading factor in improving women’s lot. They believe that the education of women should be seen as one of many positive results of escape from the pressures of the subsistence economy. Whichever view one takes, it is clear that education is one of the most visible and far-reaching of the changes Palestinian women are experiencing.
