Abstract
The Republic of Tunisia, independent since 1956, covers about 165 000 square kilometres and has a growing population of about 7 million, most of whom live in the towns and rural areas of the fertile Mediterranean coastal region. About 40 per cent are under the age of 15 years. Despite significant economic growth, unemployment and under-employment remain serious problems for the country. About a third of the workforce is in agriculture.
