Abstract

In Chapter 6 mention was made on a number of occasions of areas where standard French is used in addition to a creole language. In this section attention will be focused on French creoles themselves. However, before that can be undertaken, it is important to define what is meant by a creole and to contrast it with two other terms which are occasionally used to refer to different aspects of the same linguistic phenomenon, lingua franca and pidgin.
