Abstract
Early in 1984 a number of changes were made at the Afghan Ministry of Defence. Major General Nazar Mohammed was appointed Chief of Staff. Nazar Mohammed’s previous job had been Commander of the Air Force and Air Defence Forces. Also on 7 January, Brigadier Mohammed Nabi Azimi was appointed First Deputy Defence Minister. This post had been vacant for two years. Colonel Shahnawaz Tani, whose 37th Commando Brigade had performed well at Khost the previous year, was promoted to brigadier and made commander of the highly important Central Corps.1
