Abstract

The number of quiz shows on television is a testament to their popularity. They enjoy consistently high ratings and not an evening goes by without at least one, with all its accompanying razamattaz, appearing on our screens. But why do people watch them, what is their appeal and do they serve any other purpose apart from that of entertainment?
