Abstract
When Irish scholars brought their ‘Philosophy of Light’ to Laon in northern France they also brought with them a knowledge of Greek. Absurd, in a way, that the culture of south-eastern Europe should become the special property of learned men in the north-westernmost tip. Yet there is in Laon a Greek-Latin dictionary, written by an Irishman dating from around 800 ad, which is a silent witness to a spiritual link between two fragile and far distant extremities of the Western world, Greece and Ireland, each in its day an island of scholarship, then stretching towards each other across vast expanses of space and time to meet in the tiny ‘City of Light’, Laon.
