Abstract

Being made redundant from your father’s printing firm is not the best start to a commercial career but that was the situation for Michael Dunn in Liverpool in 1972. He joined a local health food shop as its manager until the shop was bought by a large chain, Holland and Barrett, in 1974. Dunn moved on to become an area manager with a smaller chain, Country Life Wholefoods, and left them in 1976, this time with the objective of starting his own health food retail business.
