Abstract
In the summer of 1926, Dr Leos Janacek, encouraged by his recent official visit to London, and flushed with the success of his Sinfonietta at the Sokol Congress in Prague, arrived in the tiny village of Hukvaldy in the Lassko region of Moravia to witness the unveiling of a plaque in his honour on the modest little schoolhouse where he was born.

Both men had hardly expected to live beyond the end of the war. Masaryk: ‘When I got back [end of 1918] I well not feeling very well; I didn’t think I had very much longer to live’ (Čapek, p. 290). Janáček: ‘So the New Year 1918. Long, long ago, more than fifteen years ago, I imagined I would die in 1917. On the contrary, I have unexpectedly come alive.’ (A. Rektorys (ed.), Korespondence Us Gabrielou Horvá- thovou (Prague, 1950), p. 51.)

According to Janacek’s servant Mára, the President left immediately after the performance without inviting Janáček into his box because he had been told ‘who the lady was’ sitting by the composer’s side with her husband- Kamila Stösslová (M. Trkanová, U Janáčků (Prague, 1964), p. 116.) This widely-circulated piece of hearsay does not tally with the fact that Kamila’s presence at Janáček’s 70th birthday concert in Prague had caused no such problem. (See alsop. 216 of this chapter.)
