Abstract
The world-wide economic stagnation has had dramatic impacts on many cities and regions of the world economy. Various areas, especially those which were oriented toward traditional economic sectors, were severely hit by the economic crisis. Other areas, however, managed to improve their relative position by focusing attention on new products or new technologies which were able to compensate for the loss in traditional manufacturing or service sectors. Examples of fairly successful restructuring strategies can be found inter alia in innovative high-technology sectors and business service sectors.
