Abstract
Before trying to describe and analyse the possible achievements of Dutch sociology, I will briefly indicate the main lines of its development and some of its distinctive characteristics. This is necessary for two reasons. First, one cannot assume that the history and character of Dutch sociology are well known to foreign sociologists, since most Dutch sociologists write and publish only in their native language. Second, achievements depend on both the internal and external functioning of the sociological system. Therefore I will describe the latter first.
