A Turkish Role in Regional Defence, 1952



During the course of discussions on the organisation and goals of the MEC, considerable attention was given to Turkey’s role in a regional defence grouping. Consideration was given to Turkey’s relations with its Arab neighbours and to the leadership role Turkey might play. The following vignettes provide important glimpses into issues that arose during 1952 and impinged on Turkey’s standing in the Arab world and the potential for a successful Middle East defence.
