The Effects of Abuse — the Later Years

Abstract

This chapter looks at the prospects for abused children in later life. The first section examines some of the evidence that exists about the long-term effects of abuse. This is followed by accounts of the early adulthood and present situations of Marie, Helen and Sarah. Their updated stories are retold in the third person because by this means objective observations can be made. The final section examines ways in which social workers can help adults who were abused as children.
