Abstract

The spark that ignited long-smouldering tensions was an unpopular plan of educational reform proposed by the Minister of Public Instruction. A great shout of protest rose from the universities against this allegedly reactionary plan and also against the alternative offered by the PCI. By the middle of February 1977 the whole of the vast university city in Rome was occupied by the students, and universities in Bologna, Florence, Urbino, Milan and other cities were occupied as well, and there were many student marches, among which the extra-parliamentary left was very active.
