Abstract

Many prevention policies are available to control legal addictions. These policies range from broad instruments which attempt to control consumption to more specific measures, designed to control some of the problems arising from consuming these commodities, e.g. drink driving legislation. The purpose of this chapter is to explore how price can be used to control legal addictions and to outline some of the barriers to the implementation of price control policies that exist in the UK. The discussion is illustrated by reference to alcohol and tobacco consumption and the harm they create.
