Abstract
‘Mariana’, ‘Supposed Confessions of a Second-Rate Sensitive Mind’, ‘Song: A spirit haunts the year’s last hours’, and ‘The Kraken’: these are the best of Poems, Chiefly Lyrical (1830). Each originates in Tennyson’s despondency, and the least successful is the most directly personal: ‘Supposed Confessions’.
